What is Nordic walking and how can it help me?
With its roots in off-season cross country ski training and later adapted by the mainstream for recreational fitness, Nordic Walking is definitely a fitness technique. In fact, Nordic Walking is a full body fitness technique that allows you to work harder whilst making it feel even easier! This is why it was also picked up by physiotherapists as a rehabilitation tool and what makes it such a versatile and accessible activity.
With its use of specially designed straps (or handles depending on the poles) many of the muscles of the upper body are engaged to propel the walker forwards. Approximately 90% of the muscles in the body are recruited in Nordic Walking, notably the large muscles of the arms, shoulders and back.
Benefits of Nordic Walking include:
Improved posture
Improved balance
Cardiovascular benefits
Increased confidence
Greater muscle recruitment
Increased endurance
Improved mobility
Greater bone density
Lower body fat percentage *
* When combined with other healthy lifestyle practices
