What is a gait assessment and why might I need one?
A gait assessment is an in clinic or virtual assessment carried out by a qualified assessor. Following the initial consultation the customer is asked to walk on either a treadmill or on the floor, in both bare feet and in shoes. Based on the findings, the assessor may ask the customer to perform a series of movements, both aided and unaided, where the assessor can identify muscular imbalance, muscular weakness or joint impingement that might be contributing to movement dysfunction. Such dysfunctions often present as pain or discomfort and/or limited range of motion at a joint or joints.
Such an assessment can help you to pin point the source of your pain or discomfort and will inform the steps needed to regain pain free movement and full range of motion, or as a basis to recommend referral to a relevant specialist.
An assessment will include some or all of the following:
An initial consultation
A treadmill gait assessment
A postural assessment
A movement assessment
Recommendations for treatment and management
Remedial massage
